To help encourage more girls to study and enjoy maths, STEMNET sought out six diverse and inspirational women, who are STEM Ambassadors, to talk about the importance that maths plays in their role on an everyday basis. Their stories are intended to engage young people’s interest, motivate their future development and develop excitement about the diversity of future career opportunities available through the application of maths.
Recent evaluation of STEMNET’s programmes elicited feedback from teachers which expressed a need for more mathematics resources. The evaluation also showed that after contact with a STEM Ambassador, 78% of pupils say they think maths is important for everyday life; demonstrating the very positive impact that STEM Ambassadors have.
The new STEMNET ‘Real Life Maths’ resources combine detailed case studies of inspirational STEM Ambassadors with practical classroom activities based on the real life maths that they use in their careers. The classroom activities are aligned with Key Stage 3 (11-14 age groups) curriculum requirements and have been developed to help teachers deliver informal and interactive lessons.
