Science is fascinating, especially to kids who want to explore the ins and outs of the universe and figure out how everything works. However, when you’re instructing your kids on scientific procedures, especially if you’re doing projects at home, there are some things they should be aware of so that they can study science safely.
Use Safety Gear
One of the most important things to teach your kids about science is the proper safety gear. This could be goggles if you’re looking at mild chemical reactions, or an apron if you’re cooking in the kitchen. Following the proper procedure is also an important part of studying science safely because if you skip steps, your experiment could potentially go wrong. Even if you’re simply making a baking soda volcano, it’s important to wear the appropriate safety gear and follow the right steps to prevent injuries.
Teach Them Warning Labels
It is also important to help your kids understand warning labels. This is especially important if you are using chemicals in your experiments. Warning labels come in a variety of sizes and it’s important that they understand the basics of all of them. For example, you should teach kids the basics of how the NFPA 704 system works. This could mean simply showing them the blue, yellow, red and white diamond and explaining what the different hazards mean. You don’t need to go too in-depth as you teach them, but they should understand what the warning labels mean and which materials to avoid.
Establish Clear Communication
Another important facet of teaching your children how to science safely is to establish clear communication. Because there are so many things you can do to teach your children science outside the classroom, it’s important that while you do so, you’ve established clear communication with your children to prevent injuries as you explore science together. Establishing clear communication could be as simple as letting them know that only the adults will handle certain chemicals or set up certain experiments. It’s incredibly important that your children understand clearly how to engage with science, else they could accidentally injure themselves.
Kids want to learn more about the world around them, which is why doing science with your kids can be an adventure. But you’ll want to do what you can to help them study science safely so that they can enjoy the experience without getting hurt.
