Job description

The PDRA will be involved in the design of a next generation system for robotic endoscopy, leveraging advances in camera systems and optics miniaturisation. The goal of the project is to improve the optomechatronics of endoscopes so that in tandem with computational achievements in 3D vision, solve the problem of 3D reconstruction. The PDRA will investigate new lens technologies to improve image quality and leverage approaches such as depth from focus/defocus. He/she will be responsible for optical system simulation, system construction and evaluation, and ex vivo and in vivo experimentation, and final packaging into an endoscope format. Expected tools to be used are optics design programs like Zemax and OSLO, or numerical computation IDEs like Matlab. The PDRA will be given freedom to submit M.Sc. and M.Res. projects as co-supervisor, as well as become part of PhD student supervision.

The post holder will be employed within the Translational Imaging Group, part of UCL’s Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC) with strong interactions between various clinical partners, especially at the Institute of Ophthalmology, UCL, and Chitra Sethia Centre for Robotics and Minimal Access Surgery, UCL.

Candidates must have a PhD, equivalent qualification, or equivalent industrial experience, in optics, optical system design, image processing or a closely related field. Candidates must possess a first or upper second undergraduate degree, or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a related subject and be able to demonstrate excellent engineering and communication skills.

All candidates must have demonstrable experience of scientific programming and optical system development. Familiarity with light-field technology and simulation of micro-lens systems is highly desirable. An in-depth working knowledge of optical systems, as evidenced by a PhD or equivalent degree or equivalent industrial experience is essential. Experience with Matlab, Python, or C/C++ programming is necessary.
